Football betting in detail

Football sits inside a sportsbook covering roughly 35 sport categories plus a separate esports list, per the sportsbook policy. Beyond that count, Stake publishes remarkably little about its football offer, and the gap is worth naming before the rules.

There is no published market count for a major league fixture, no list of bet types by competition, no stated coverage depth for lower divisions or youth football, and no margin or overround figure anywhere. No independent margin study for this book was available to us either.

That means the one thing a football bettor most wants, whether the prices are competitive, cannot be answered from published information, and we will not invent a number for it.

The only house edge figure Stake states is internal and easy to misread. The rakeback article uses a default 3 percent house edge to work out the theoretical value of sportsbook stakes for rebate purposes.

That is an input to a rebate formula, not a published margin on your accumulator, and clause 10.5 of the terms of service reserves the right to alter the house edge with no notice.

The rules that will decide your bets

• Same Game Multi voiding is all or nothing. If one leg of a Same Game Multi is voided, the whole bet is voided. Books that void the affected leg and recalculate the rest treat you better on a postponed player market or a withdrawn starter.
• Cash out excludes Same Game Multi entirely. It is offered on selected pre match and live singles and multis only. Build your bet as a same game combination and you are committed to the outcome.
• Every cash out request carries a time delay before it is processed, so a price you see during a swinging match is not necessarily the price you receive.
• Postponements settle inside 48 hours or void. A fixture completed within 48 hours is settled as played; otherwise the bet is voided. That is the rule to check when a match is abandoned for weather or floodlight failure.
• Palpable error tolerance is wide. A bet whose payout departs by more than 100 percent from the market average may be voided. In practice that means a badly mispriced football line can be taken back, and the tolerance is set in the operator's favour.
• Price change handling is good. You can choose between Accept Any Odds, Only Higher Odds and No Odds Changes; the default on a new account is No Odds Changes, so a fresh account will not silently take a shortened price.

Two gaps with practical consequences

First, the sportsbook policy and the terms of service both omit any ceiling on the payout from a single bet slip. That is not the same as an unlimited payout; it means the ceiling is undocumented, so a large accumulator return has no published assurance of being paid in full and no published cap to plan around.

Second, in play streaming and any conditions attached to watching a match are not documented on a Stake page we could verify, so do not assume you can follow a fixture on site.

How football interacts with your balance

Two connections catch people out. Football stakes count towards the compulsory turnover on a deposit only when the event finishes and the bet is graded, per the wager requirement article, not when the slip is placed.

Back a title winner in August and that deposit's obligation, and therefore your ability to withdraw, stays open until the market settles.

And rebates do not apply to everything: voided bets and bets you cash out are excluded from rakeback, so trading out of a position costs you the rebate as well as the margin on the cash out price.
